Perched in Mount Kenya's fertile southern foothills, the Kii factory benefits from rich volcanic soil, ideal for growing premium Kenyan coffee. Local farmers cultivate about half an acre each, typically with 250 coffee trees, and bring their carefully selected cherries to Kii. Managed by the Rungeto Farmers' Cooperative Society, Kii is renowned for high-quality processing and clean facilities.
Only ripe cherries are accepted, followed by hand sorting and floating to remove any damaged beans. The coffee is depulped, fermented, washed, and then soaked to enhance Kenya's signature flavours. It’s dried for two weeks on raised beds designed for optimal air flow and temperature.
Once dried, the beans are milled, sorted by size and shape, and prepared for export, ensuring consistent quality. Rungeto’s meticulous attention to each step results in the distinctive, sought-after profiles of Kenyan coffee that the specialty market values highly.
